GREEN TOWNSHIP'S ARSON DOG (SAMMY) IS LAID TO REST

6/23/06: Cincinnati's first arson dog has died after a tremendous career of solving fires. Sammy, a black labrador retriever, began her career in Maine when a state trooper found her wandering along the side of a highway. She was then placed in a pound. Her fondness for tennis balls got her out of the pound and into the K-9 training program. Sammy was partnered with Steve Claytor, a fire investigator with the Green Township Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services. After five weeks of training, Sammy was sworn in as a Green Township employee in 1994. Claytor and her began investigating fires in southwest Ohio. Claytor estimated Sammy had helped him investigate more than 1,000 fires throughout her career. Sammy was well-known in the area from her many demonstrations and public appearances. In 2001, Sammy was forced into retirement because of advancing arthritis. Claytor took on K-9 Maverick and still investigates fires in the area. (copyright:channelcincinnati.com)
