HAZ-MAT DRILL AT ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL

10/10/07: Students at one Tri-State school put our emergency crews to the test. A full scale disaster drill involving multiple agencies took place at Anderson High School with the same goal of keeping your kids safe. "I'm calling from Anderson High School and we've had a chemical spill in room 101."By placing this call, Anderson's principal starts off the drill. The scenario: inside room 101, close to a dozen students are suffering from health problems after a chemical spill involving a white powdery substance. "These are the kind of things that can happen at any school any day of the week because what happens in a chemistry lab using different chemicals, are teachers are very careful, but as we all know things can happen," said Diana Carter, Anderson High School Principal. Anderson Fire Department knew it was training day but weren't sure what to expect. They arrive inside the school and begin removing the students. The firefighters are being watched as they handle the disaster. "They did a good job of getting the students in and out of the atmosphere, securing the area so hazmat can clean it up later and get the students loaded up so we can get them over to Anderson Mercy," said Assistant Chief Tom Reimar, of the Anderson Fire Department. At Mercy Anderson Hospital, the students arrive to a waiting decontamination area. "I felt nervous when they pulled up because you had to stay serious and act it out but I think they did a good job and took care of us pretty well so if that really did happen I'd feel safe," said Payne Rinkin, an Anderson Student. Safety is what all the agencies here are trying to accomplish. One of the biggest challenge involved communication. "Working with our own department we do that every day so we are used to that, but when you throw other people into the mix its tough to work with them but I think it went well," said Lt. Chris Kasperczyk with the Anderson Fire Department. Representatives from all the agencies will meet in the next couple of weeks to do a post evaluation and take a closer look at what they can improve on with their crisis plan. (wcpo.com)

GARAGE FIRE EXTENDS INTO RESIDENCE IN ANDERSON TOWNSHIP

10/8/07: An Anderson Township family is homeless after an overnight garage fire spread to their home. The fire broke out just after 2:00 Monday morning in a home at 7733 Arlington Avenue in Anderson Township. Two people were sleeping inside the house when fire broke out in the two-car garage. When firefighters first arrived around 2:15 a.m., they found the garage and breezeway to the house fully engulfed in flames. The two people living there were able to safely escape, though there were no working smoke detectors inside the home. Firefighters told 9News loud popping sounds from the fire woke the pair up. There is heavy damage to the garage and kitchen area of the home, with extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the rest of the small home. Although the residents survived, unfortunately one of their cats did not. As of 5:30 a.m., firefighters were still on the scene cleaning up, after having to use special foam to try to bring the fire under control. Anderson Township fire officials said they do not believe this fire was suspicious, and their investigation into the exact cause is continuing. (wcpo.com)

FATAL CRASH ON I-275 IN COLERAIN TOWNSHIP

10/5/07: Part of I-275 in Colerain Township was shut down Friday morning after a deadly accident. Police say just before 8:00 a.m., 26-year-old Jeremy Whitener of Cincinnati was traveling westbound when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed three lanes of traffic, crashed into a guardrail, then came to a stop in a wooded area. Whitener was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was transported by medical helicopter to University Hospital where she is listed in critical condition. Police say both Whitener and the female passenger were trapped inside the vehicle. According to police, several witnesses said the vehicle Whitener was driving was racing another vehicle at a high rate of speed. Investigators believe speed was a factor, but said the two vehicles did not come into contact with each other at any time. Police say Whitener was wearing his seat belt, but the female passenger was not. Police do not believe alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the accident. (wcpo.com)

CAR CRASHES INTO BAR PATIO AND KILLS FEMALE PATRON ON HARRISON AVE

10/2/07: A woman is dead, and two others are recovering after being struck by a driver witnesses said was doing donuts in a sports bar parking lot. Police arrested a Cleveland man after the pick-up truck he was driving killed a Lawrenceburg woman and injured two of her friends. It happened just before 1:00 a.m. Tuesday outside the Rudder's Grille and Pub on Harrison Avenue in Harrison. Though the Rudder's Pub remained closed Tuesday night, you could still easily see where the deadly crashed happened. Orange temporary fencing now covered the patio gating that the crash ripped away. The large, Ford F-250 pick-up truck apparently hit the curb and went slightly airborne and crashed into the bar's crowded outdoor patio. Rudder's regular customer David Walker was there. He said, "I was sitting right there at the table that's missing. We all jumped back. There were 25 to 30 people. People scattered like ants, man. "The driver, 22-year-old Reynaldo Perez, is facing charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and assault, among several others. Perez's truck crashed into the patio, killing Rudder's regular customer, 33-year old April Mcbride of Lawrenceburg. She was pronounced dead at Franciscan Medical Center. Walker said Perez left Rudder's and came back 15 minutes later, driving his truck through the parking lot at high speed. Walker added, "He came back around here and kept doing donuts, like this, and (then back through the parking lot). Instead of hitting the car, he came over this way and hit the girl and he drug her up here." Walker said he doesn't remember seeing Perez at the bar before. It's believed Perez may have come to Harrison to work a construction job. Police said some kind of disagreement involving Perez happened at the bar before the crash. Sgt. Doug Herberger of the Harrison Police said, "I believe there may have been an altercation between the driver of the vehicle and some of the other patrons of the liquor establishment." (wcpo.com)
