READING FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO CO EMERGENCY

11/14/06: A family had to be hospitalized after they were overcome by carbon monoxide fumes in their Reading home Tuesday morning. The family of two adults and two children awoke feeling ill, complaining of nausea and dizziness. They suspected it was carbon monoxide poisoning and called 911 for help. Emergency crews responded to the home at 1608 Sanborn near Hunt Road just before 9:00 a.m. Duke Energy technicians believe a malfunctioning furnace is to blame. After crews rescued two family members and Duke Energy Technicians successfully aired out the two-story home, they went back in to pinpoint the possible source of the fumes. They found the highest readings around a furnace, which they suspect may have been leaking carbon monoxide gas. Even firefighters were surprised to see how high the carbon monoxide levels were inside. Firefighter Paul Gallo with the Reading Fire Department said, "We were getting readings of 480 parts per million, which is very high... yes, off the scale. OSHA recommends workers get less than 35 parts per million." All four family members are currently at UC Hospital's emergency room in fair condition. Reading firefighters said they fear for the safety of families every fall. Officials on scene said the only way to avoid a carbon monoxide problem is to get a carbon monoxide alarm, and to have furnaces and other heating sources checked by a specialist every year.
