MULTI ALARM FIRE IN SHARONVILLE APARTMENT COMPLEX

7/30/06: One Sharonville resident is lucky to be alive today after two neighbors warned him of a fire he was unaware of Sunday afternoon. Thomas Segelke's grill caught on fire at his Timber Ridge Lane apartment when he was cooking out. However, Segelke was unaware the grill caught fire until Emily Drakulich and her roomate ran upstairs to warn him. "My roommate and I both ran up there and were pounding on his door," said Drakulich. "He had no idea it was even on fire at that point. "The fire occurred just two weeks after state officials introduced new grilling laws that ban charcoal and gas grills from porches or balconies unless there is a sprinkler. Segelke is fortunate to be spared injury from the fire and he has two neighbors he has never met before to thank. "Today was the first time I met her," said Segelke. "But she's on the Christmas card list now."

CINCINNATI BOMB UNIT RESPONDS TO NORWOOD FOR UNSTABLE DYNAMITE

7/15/06: Police have given the "all clear" after a Norwood neighborhood had to be evacuated for almost six hours Saturday. The announcement was made around 8 p.m. Saturday night. Police evacuated approximately 20 houses as a precaution after three cases of "unstable" dynamite were discovered in a home on Spencer Avenue near Hudson and Williams avenues in Norwood. Police say three cases of dynamite weighing about 150 pounds were found at the home of a man who they say brought it there 15 years ago when he moved into the house. Police say the dynamite had "crystallized." For hours the bomb squad worked to stabilize the dynamite by what seemed like "fighting fire with fire" -- pouring diesel fuel over the dynamite very slowly to attain the desired chemical reaction. They say the process would take some time -- and it did. Almost six hours. The bomb squad had two daunting tasks. First to stabilize the dynamite and then remove it to take it to an unspecified location to be burned. (wcpo.com)

HAMILTON COUNTY TRAINING OFFICERS COMMITTEE INFORMATION

5/31/06: Several TO's have been discussing about starting up (bringing back) the HCTO Committee, which is part of the Hamilton County Fire Chiefs Association. If we get enough feedback from County FD's we could possibly meet to discuss our goals (mission), issues, and how we can be a vital and active organization for all FD's in Hamilton County. If the interest and commitment is there, we can then take it to the HCFCA Board for discussion and review. We also would like to include Safety Officers as well (because most likely if your the training officer for your department, you are also probably the safety officer). Please email me webmaster@hamiltoncountyfirefighters.com if interested or comments. Thanks, Patrick
