FAIRFIELD FIRE ENGINE INVOLVED IN FATAL CRASH ON ROUTE 4 (BUTLER COUNTY)

8/2/06: Witnesses are telling conflicting stories about who caused a crash Wednesday between a Fairfield fire truck and a car and investigators are working to sort out what really happened. The 73-year-old Fairfield woman in the car was killed and a woman who saw the crash said she's worried the victim is going to get blamed for it. Rebekka Morris said she saw it all and it was not the victim's fault, but police said her account isn't the same as others who witnessed the accident. Morris went to the police Thursday to tell them what she saw at the intersection of Rt. 4 and Camelot Lane. She said she saw the Fairfield fire truck run a red light and slam into the car, killing Rayann Cavin. "That light was absolutely green in our direction and in hers," Morris said. "Positive because we started to inch forward and stopped right before the fire truck hit the intersection. We had a green light." Fire officials weren't answering questions about the crash Thursday. Police said Morris' story conflicts with some initial witness reports taken on the scene. "Not all of the witnesses' stories match up completely. We're trying to find out what happened and why the differences. We have both of our traffic crash investigators working on this case. They're evaluating all the witness statements and we're gathering all of the information we have," Fairfield Police Lt. Ken Colburn said. Part of the investigation will be to determine if preemptive devices, which are triggered by the noise of sirens worked. They're supposed to turn lights green for fire trucks. The company that installed the devices is already involved in the investigation. "Either it wasn't working or it didn't have time to work. "The fire truck was on its way to a fire and investigators said after hitting the victim's car, her car then hit two other vehicles. Detectives said the people in those cars were not seriously injured. "It's awful because those are the people who are supposed to come help you, not cause the accident. It basically happened in slow motion to see it you don't believe you saw it," Morris said. Police said the investigation is expected to take another week. The fire department isn't releasing the name of the driver of the fire truck or if he's being put on any sort of leave during the investigation. (wcpo.com)
