42's FIRST DUE ON HAZELGROVE DR IN PLEASANT RUN FARMS

8/14/07: A candle is being blamed as the cause of an early morning fire that gutted a Hazelgrove Street home. Firefighters found heavy flames coming from the bi-level home in the 1500 block of Hazelgrove Street in the Pleasant Run subdivision when they responded to a 12:58 a.m. report of a fire, Forest Park Fire Chief Mike Rupp said this morning. The roof collapsed while firefighters were battling the blaze, he said. No was injured in the fire. Two residents were displaced and were assisted by the Red Cross. A candle in the lower level of the home started the blaze, Rupp said. The home, valued at $116,700, is considered a total loss, he said. Fire firefighters from Springfield Township, Colerain Township, Springdale and Greenhills assisted in battling the fire. The Forest Park Fire Department has a contract to cover Pleasant Run subdivision area because their fire station is closer to the area. (Enquirer.com)

DROWNING IN THE GREAT MIAMI RIVER NEAR US 50 IN WHITEWATER TWP

8/14/07: After a search that went well into the night, Hamilton County Dive Teams found the body of a man who drowned in the Whitewater River. Deputies say just before 6 p.m. Lorenzo Rodriguez, 25, of North Bend, was fishing on the banks of the Whitewater River near the US 50 overpass with two friends when he entered the river to swim. His friends say Rodriguez went underwater and never resurfaced. "You can be in ankle deep water and take a step and be in water over your head just with one step so it's a dangerous river," said Chief Jim Hughes, of the Miami Township fire department. "We don't want people swimming in it, of course." Search crews had difficulties because of the murky water and debris. Deputies say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation. (wcpo.com)
